  29. One of my clients just had a VERY BAD EXPERIENCE with a DESKSTATION VENDOR!

  31. He paid full price ($23,000) for a turnkey system that after SIX MONTHS of screwing around by the vendor STILL didn't have the release version 
  32. of 4.0 installed. (My client _thought_ it was 4.0, but none of my scenes would render on it Just kept crashing.)

  34. I got bounced from NewTek, to Deskstation, finally to the vendor. TWICE!

  36. And now, two weeks after I reported this problem to the vendor, he STILL has as yet to send the upgrade package (which the vendor has 'sitting 
  37. in his office') to my client!

  39. And if that's not bad enough, the vendor never configured the network properly?!?!?
  40. He charged the guy for Ethernet cards, cables, etc. - but did he install the most basic of shareware FTP utilities (ie: GUI-FTP, WS_FTP, 
  41. etc.)?!??
  42. Nooooo-ooooo!!!!

  44. According to my client (one of those artsy types who prefers to get work done as oppposed to d***ing around with hardware), he had to use the 
  45. stock command line FTP, and the vendor taught him some convoluted process whereby he had to issue all the GET & PUT commands by hand.

  47. After carting the system to the vendor four times, the suggested solution was to buy a Zip drive and copy files using CrossDOS?!?
  48. This is AFTER charging the client for the Ethernet cards?!?

  50. Anyway, I was able to solve most of his problems in half a day.
  51. While I didn't succeed in getting Samba to work perfectly, he can now at least transfer large groups of files with a few mouse clicks!
  52. (I just got off the phone with him, and he's really happy. It took him all of about five minutes to figure out how to use WS_FTP.)

  54. I've read some of your reviews in Microtimes, and you could probably figure all this out on your own.
  55. However, if you're paying for a TURNKEY system, make sure your vendor know his head from a hole in the ground.

  57. To their credit, NewTek tech support has been very sympathetic, and helpful.
